Bull lands 200-teraflops supercomputer deal | | 2008-10-09 | | | Bull has been contracted by the German HPC research centre Forschungszentrum Jülich to provide a 200 Teraflops supercomputer. The government sponsered Juropa (Jülich Research on Petaflops Architectures) project was set up in 2007 to investigate emerging cluster technologies and achieve a new class of cost-efficient supercomputers for peta-scale computing. The 200 Teraflops cluster will be a mix of Bull NovaScale rack-mounted servers, and Sun’s X64 blade servers. The Novascale servers are based on Intel’s Xeon X64 processors and support Linux, Windows, and Bull’s GCOS mainframe environment. Cluster management middleware is to be provided by Munich based Partec. The new hardware, due to be installed in early 2009, will increase the performance of the existing prototype cluster by a factor of 20.Anticipated research projects include such areas as energy management, materials development and climate research. | |
