Bull launches single socket NovaScale blade server

2008-08-06
Bull has launched the NovaScale B240 blade server, the first ever single-socket blade server on the market. Part of Bull’s green ’Bio Data Center’ initiative, the server is aimed at businesses on a tight IT budget, hospitals, local authorities, and subsidiaries or large branch offices of major companies.Featuring either dual-core or quad-core single-socket Intel Xeon 3000 series processors, the B240 blade server can be used as either an IT infrastructure or application server. The housing for the blades is less than 35cms wide, and can contain up to 14 Bull blade servers, whether these are X86 or Power6-based units. This allows for a single and unique, scalable and easily administered platform for customers using VMware, Linux, AIX and Windows.Bull’s Rapid Deployment Solution (RDS) allows the installation of multiple blades in the time it usually takes to deploy a single blade manually resulting in lower server deployment costs, and potentially the elimination of most of the errors that result from manual deployment. In addition, the RDS provides the tools needed to facilitate update operations, migration towards VMware infrastructures or easy restoration of system images.Using Bull’s R@ck’n Roll rack based turnkey system which allows configuration and integration in advance of delivery, up to 70 Bull NovaScale and/or Escala servers can be delivered directly to a customer’s site in a turnkey configuration that is ready for immediate deployment. This means blade-based infrastructures can be installed and up and running in hours rather than days. The B240 server features include: one single-socket; dual-core or quad-core Intel Xeon 3000 series processor; 1333 MHz FSB Bus, up to 24 Gbytes of main memory (FBD DDR2); up to 292 Gbytes of disk capacity per blade, extendable to 730 Gbytes with the SAS storage extension unit; 50% less energy consumption than a traditional server of an equivalent capacity.Immediately available, the list price for a B240 configuration with 2 Gbytes of memory, an Intel Xeon 3110 series processor and a 73 Gbyte SAS disk, Rapid Deployment Solution license plus a NovaScale Master license is €1,495.
