Cisco’s mainframe SAN tech gets upgrade

2009-08-02
Cisco in partnership with IBM has announced enhancements to its MDS 9000 SAN products for IBM’s System z mainframes. The updates aim to improve security, data traffic acceleration over long distances and disaster recovery.XRC (Extended Remote Copy) Acceleration software works with IBM’s z/OS Global Mirror mirroring technology to accelerate data traffic travelling very long distances over the wide area network reducing bandwidth consumption and shrinking update windows, while eliminating the need for costly, separate channel extension products according to Cisco.TrustSec Fibre Channel Link Encryption is a hardware based encryption system for data transmitted over metropolitan-area networks, or, in high security environments, between MDS 9000 switches within a single data centre. Encryption can be deployed on a per-port basis, and with open systems SANS as well as IBM’s FICON Fibre connection technology. The MDS 9000 I/O Accelerator (IOA) is a SAN-based intelligent fabric application that speeds up SAN traffic, allowing faster, more cost effective data backup and disaster recovery. IOA can be used with disk or tape systems using any transport protocol for direct attached or remote machines. The Cisco SAN Fabric Manager has been updated - each node will now have a 15,000 device connection capacity while up to 10 nodes can be federated for reporting purposes for improved manageability of large storage environments.
