Dell buys Perot Systems | | 2009-09-23 | | | Dell has acquired IT services outfit Perot Systems for a reported $3.9 billion. The move marks the expansion of the hardware manufacturer into the services sector, and follows HP’s takeover of IDS and IBM’s burgeoning services business.Perot Systems was founded by flamboyant Texan Ross Perot in 1962 after his IBM bosses rejected his proposal of an IT services division. The company supplies IT services, applications, technology, infrastructure, business processes and consulting to government, healthcare and other commercial sectors.Dell hope the deal will make it less reliant on falling hardware sales. "We consider Perot Systems to be a premium asset with great people that enhances our opportunities for immediate and long-term growth. This significantly expands Dell’s enterprise-solutions capabilities and makes Perot Systems’ strengths available to even more customers around the world" said Dell CEO Michael Dell. Dell will also be able to offer its products to Perot Systems customers.Subject to government approval, the deal will be finalised Q4 2009. Current CEO Peter Altabef will remain at the helm and Ross Perot Jr is being considered for a Dell directorship. | |
