Dell launches D2D backup and recovery package

2008-10-09
Dell has unveiled its latest storage product - a new disk-to-disk (D2D) backup and recovery appliance which will be offered with either Symantec’s Backup Exec 12.5 or CommVault’s Simpana 7 software bundled on Dell’s MD1000i systems.D2D is faster at writing and recovering data than traditional tape because it does not have to be streamed to the relevant file location. The PowerVault DL2000, aimed at midmarket enterprises with limited IT resources, features automated setup (including LUN assignment and RAID configuration) and management of the tiered-storage backup. Dell claims the device can be installed and activated by a non-IT professional within 30 minutes. The PowerVault DL2000 uses between one to 12 shelves of MD1000i storage, giving 3 TB to 144 TB capacity. Extra capacity can be added while the device is in operation without the need for reconfiguration. In addition to backup, recovery and deduplication, the system also allows continuous data protection for Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, file servers, and protection for VMware and Microsoft virtual machines. When combined with the Dell PowerVault TL2000, TL4000, or ML6000 tape library, the DL2000 can provide all the advantages of backup-to-disk for rapid restoration, with the security of tape for offsite disaster recovery. The DL2000 will be available in late October with prices starting at $15,000 for a 3 TB system.
