EMC launches integrated virtual management package

2009-07-19
EMC has amalgamated its IT management software portfolio under a single brand which it calls the Ionix family. This combines within a single window, the automated server compliance and configuration softwares gained from the acquisition of Configuresoft in May along with elements from the previous acquisitions of Smarts, nLayers, Voyence, Infra, ControlCenter.EMC claims the move will facilitate the migration from physical to virtual IT environments.Chris Gahagan, senior vice president of EMC Ionix, said of the development "(this) announcement comes at a critical time for customers who are moving aggressively to virtualise their data centres. While virtualisation holds the promise of increased efficiencies and reduced costs, its dynamic nature forces companies to think differently about management - as companies seek new ways to automate, manage, and gain control and compliance of the virtualised data centre. Customers are quickly realising that legacy IT management tools simply cannot keep pace."The Ionix family consists of four sub-groups:Service Discovery and Mapping allows the mapping of servers and applications throughout the datacentre and incorporates server configuration management, database configuration management and system population and change management.IT Operations Intelligence allows monitoring of services across physical and virtual environments to provide automated root-cause and impact assessment.Data Centre Automation and Compliance incorporates compliance management for servers, storage, application dependencies and networks.Service Management enables the deployment of IT Infrastructure Library service management."While none of this is brand-new technology, we’re offering better integration between these products and services, so customers can do things more quickly than before." said EMC’s Colin Murray.
