EMC offers hard drives with integrated online backup | | 2008-07-17 | | EMC has announced that Iomega hard drives will feature its Mozy and Retrospect backup and disaster recovery software, allowing users access to EMC’s cloud-based online storage system.
Initially aimed at home and SMB users, the company is giving Iomega drive owners 2GB of free storage from the MozyHome online service or unlimited Mozy storage for $4.95 a month. An Iomega 500GB hard drive costs about $125.
The Retrospect Express application allows users to configure both the online service and hard drives using a single interface and is being offered as a free download.
The move represents a consolidation and integration of several EMC recent acquisitions. EMC bought Iomega for $213 million in April 2008, about six months after acquiring Berkeley Data Systems, the developer of Mozy. The Retrospect packaged software is a result of EMC’s acquisition of Dantz in October 2004.
Iomega external hard drives with the new software bundle will be available this month in the U.S. and in international markets later this summer. EMC also said users of its Retrospect Express can upgrade for a fee to EMC Retrospect Professional for Windows or Desktop for Macintosh.
