VMware’s latest release for ESXi 3.5 and ESXi 3.5 contained a "time-bomb" bug which prevented many customers from restarting their virtual servers.
ESXi 3.5 and ESXi 3.5 Update 2, which were released on July 27th, contained a chunk of pre-release code which caused the product license to expire on August 12th. Users who had shut down their virtual servers received the message "A General System error occurred: Internal error" when they tried to restart. Machines left running were unaffected.
VMware has released an “ express patch”
for customers unlucky enough to have already installed or upgraded to ESX or ESXi 3.5u2, and give advice to affected customers here
