HP introduces 6Gb/s SAS architecture | | 2009-07-19 | | | HP has launched what it claims is the first 6Gb/s serial attached SCSI (SAS) infrastructure. This represents a doubling of bandwidth over existing 3Gb/s SAS storage systems. The resulting increase in data acceleration between server and storage systems will be of particular use in storage intensive and high input/output (I/O) applications including virtualization, backups and video streaming. The comprehensive 6Gb/s SAS compatible product range includes 6Gb/s SAS drives, Smart Array RAID controllers, HP ProLiant G6 servers, and (slated for release in Autumn 2009) the new HP StorageWorks D2000 family of 6Gb/s SAS Disk Enclosures. The 6Gb/s SAS drives are available with 2.5 inch 7.2K Midline, as well as 10K and 15K Enterprise drives offering capacities from 72GB to 500GB. Aimed at small to medium sized business with remote application requirements, the drives offer reduced downtime due to improved throughput and fewer I/O bottlenecks; backward compatibility with older 3Gb/s SAS systems; improved data integrity protection and hardware/OS compatibility resolution. HP Smart Array allows different RAID settings and the integration of new features. The new StorageWorks D2000 Family of 6Gb/s SAS Disk Enclosures will provide direct attach, external storage expansion and can also be used for backup, database or other storage intensive applications. The new drives are now available and can be used with HP’s ProLiant DL380, DL370, DL360, DL180 and DL160 rack-optimized servers, ProLiant BL460c server blade, and the HP ProLiant ML370, ML350 tower servers. | |
