HP to offer container virtualization technology with Integrity servers

2008-07-02
From July 2, HP will begin selling and supporting Parallels’ Virtuozzo virtualization software within its Integrity line of servers. The software will run in Windows Server 2008 as well as Linux and HP-UX.

Whereas most virtualization systems divide a physical server into different virtual machines, Virtuozzo’s containers partition an operating system into different operating environments.

This allows multiple applications to run on one copy of an operating system making it easier for IT departments to create virtual environments within a physical server, since there is only one operating system and one software stack rather than several operating systems and applications in various virtual machines.

Recently HP has incorporated a range of virtualization options into its ProLiant line of x86-based servers, including embedded versions of VMware’s ESX Server and Citrix’s XeServer hypervisor. The deal with Parallels gives the company a way to offer customers more options with its high-end line of Integrity systems beyond the virtualization capabilities of the HP-UX operating system.

"Container virtualization is increasingly popular for vitalizing high-performance, production workloads," said Serguei Beloussov, chief executive of Parallels. "This makes our technology a perfect fit with HP Integrity servers."
