IBM Power Systems consolidates server hardware

2008-05-16
In a move to consolidate its hardware profile, IBM is to unify its integrated platform System i, and Unix operating systems platform, System p, under a single brand - Power Systems.

Whilst hardware development will be consolidated, the two systems will still be available individually. and IBM will still support the three primary operating systems, AIX, IBM i and Linux, that the original systems supported.

A number of new server sets have been re-released under the Power Systems brand, now with the Power 6 processor formerly only available for high end ranges.

The IBM Power 595 supports eight to 36 cores and is said by the company to have a 30% increase in performance on its predecessor.

The company has also re-announced the IBM Power 575 a cluster node for extreme parallel processing performance. One rack in the 575 supports 448 processors. The water cooled system will be more energy efficient than previous models.

The older Power 550 and 520 are also being re-released.
