IBM adds replication to ProtecTIER products | | 2009-08-02 | | | IBM is to add asynchronous data replication to its ProtecTIER deduplication devices.ProtecTIER, originally developed by Diligent Technologies acquired by IBM in 2008, acts as a virtual tape library (VTL) allowing back up to disk prior to transfer to tape archives, or as a deduplication interface between servers and storage arrays. The replication feature will allow the transmission of deduped files from remote sites, greatly reducing bandwidth requirements and the need to ship tapes to remote sites for disaster recovery.IBM says the reduced bandwidth costs will extend the use of replication beyond critical applications with deduplication eventually becoming standard for all database operations.ProtecTIER replication is slated for release on September 4 this year as an option on ProtecTIER products. A software upgrade will be available for existing TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication | |
