IBM launches entry level SAN Volume Controller

2008-10-16
IBM has announced the introduction of an entry level version of its SAN Volume Controller (SVC) aimed at SMB customers and emerging markets. The SVC Entry Edition (EE) runs SVC storage virtualization software on a less expensive server which is limited to a maximum of 60 disk drives offering up to 14TB of usable storage. It runs on a System x3250 single-socket server (rather than the dual-core System x3550 that the standard SVC runs on). Like the standard SVC, the EE is an x86 1u rackmount server but runs at half the speed.Full SVC software will be priced on a per-disk basis at $1000 per disk. SVC software features thin provisioning and now supports IBM’s XIV storage, the DS5000, System z/VSE, HDS Universal Storage Platform and HP’s XP20000 and 24000 arrays and interoperates with Microsoft Hyper-V. Tivoli Storage Manager backup and deduplication software is expected to be added in a few months time. The EE can be upgraded to Standard SVC at a later date if required. The basic server is priced at $29,500 (40 per cent less than standard) and will ship from November 21st.
