IBM launches midrange Power System server | | 2008-10-08 | | | IBM has introduced a new Power Systems series server for the SMB Unix market.The new product was launched as part of the combined Systems i and System p, Power Systems range created by IBM in April this year and carries the "Express" brand, indicating faster deployment than enterprise-level servers and the presence of a number of automated management features to simplify maintenance.The Power 560 Express is a midrange server using IBM POWER6 (3.6GHz) processors with configurations for up to 16 processing cores per box. Main memory scales from 8GB of DDR2 (double data rate 2) RAM to 384GB. The Power 560 is made up of two linked chassis, each supporting six SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) drives that offer 2.7TB of data storage.The base system comes with two Gigabit Ethernet ports per chassis, with 10 Gigabit Ethernet as an option. The machine supports AIX 5.3 or 6.1, i 6.1 and Linux with the 2.6 kernel. In addition, Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server SP1 and SP2 and Red Hat’s Enterprise Linux 4.5 or later and 5.1 or later releases are certified on the machine.IBM have also revamped the Enterprise level Power 570 server which has been reconfigured to support 16 Power6 processing cores with the chips running at 5.0GHz or 32 Power6 cores with the chip running at 4.2GHz. At maximum configurations, the Power 570 can support up to 768GB of DDR2 RAM and 24 SAS drives.The company has also reconfigured its Power 520 Express and Power 550 Express servers, providing new 4 and 8-core options for i editions. AIX and Linux users can now add i on the same system.The Power 560 Express is available now. Prices start at $47,216.00. Pricing and availability of the updated version of the Power 570 have yet to be announced. | |
