IBM virtual storage the next generation | | 2008-06-12 | | As part of its recently unveiled Project Big Green phase 2, IBM has unveiled its next generation storage virtualisation software.
In response to customer demand for greener storage technology, IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) 4.3 software will improve storage performance, conserve energy and reduce hardware maintenance costs.
The new IBM SVC 4.3 will improve the flexibility and responsiveness of IT infrastructure by creating consolidated, virtual pools of information across the system, which will enable IT departments to respond more quickly to user demands and centrally manage resources.
Storage virtualisation technology can also reduce requirements for additional physical storage hardware, which can ultimately reduce overall energy usage.
The IBM SVC 4.3 also includes space-efficient virtual disks, space-efficient FlashCopy, virtual disk mirroring and improved interoperability.
IBM has also launched its System Storage Productivity Centre (SSPC), (the management console for SVC systems), designed as an enhanced management platform, integrating virtual and physical infrastructure management.
SSPC includes TotalStorage Productivity Centre for Replication 3.4 preinstalled, which can reduce wasted disk space by identifying duplicate data, orphan data, temporary data, and non-business data.
