Microsoft launches hypervisor for Windows Server 2008 | | 2008-06-26 | | After several months delay, Microsoft has finally released its new virtualization application for Windows Server 2008.
Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V is a hypervisor based virtualization software that allows you to run multiple operating systems on one installation of Windows Server. These include Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1 and Novell SuSE Linux Enterprise Server.
The key features include:
- Server Consolidation, including the ability to integrate 32-bit and 64-bit workloads in the same environment
- Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery, facilitating disaster recovery using geographically dispersed clustering capabilities
- Testing and Development, allowing developers to test multiple OS and application scenarios in one environment
- Dynamic Data Center, providing automated virtual machine reconfiguration, flexible resource control, and quick migration.
The virtual technology market is currently dominated by VMWare with around 90% of the market share. Hyper-V, which will be free to download for Windows Server 2008 customers is expected to gain popularity with small to medium-size businesses.
The software will be available from Microsoft from July 8th, and is likely to be offered OEM agreements with HP, Dell, IBM and Fujitsu- Siemens.
