NetApp offers free deduplication for third party storage | | 2008-08-01 | | | NetApp has announced it has that added support for its free data deduplication utility to its V-Series controllers allowing deduplication of third party storage arrays from vendors including EMC, HP, Hitachi and IBM.V-Series controllers, which virtualize third-party storage arrays in a NetApp environment, will run NetApp’s Data ONTAP OS which has the A-SIS sub-file-level deduplication technology included with it at no extra charge.Deduplication replaces redundant and repeated parts of files with pointers to master copies of those items, and can reduce file sizes by up to 20:1 or more, depending upon the level of redundancy.A-SIS deduplication is unusual in that it can be applied to primary storage as well as to backup and archival storage. According to NetApp’s Brendon Howe “By providing our V-Series customers with deduplication technology that spans from primary to archival data, they are able to better control their heterogeneous data growth while reducing costs and simplifying data management."By the end of 2008, all NetApp storage systems will include deduplication technology. The VTL product line is expected to have this capability announced shortly. | |
