Rackable's ICE Cube now available with IBM blades

2008-07-31
IBM and Rackable Systems have entered into an agreement to offer IBM’s high-performance BladeCenter servers inside Rackable’s ICE Cube modular data centres. The ICE Cube modular data centres will be equipped with IBM BladeCenter T or HT systems, which meet Network Equipment-Building System (NEBS) Level 3/ European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) requirements, making them suitably robust for extreme environments where modular data centres are often deployed, such as remote construction sites or oil fields.Portable containerized server centres are a growing area with Sun, HP and Verari offering customisable products, but until now, Rackable have only offered its own specially designed rack-mounted servers. "Rackable Systems sees this strategic relationship as further opportunity to provide our customers with unique, built-to-order solutions," stated Mark Barrenechea, CEO of Rackable. "Including IBM BladeCenter on ICE Cube enables Rackable to expand its market reach to new customers, new fault tolerant workloads and new markets requiring NEBS-compliant products."BladeCenter-specific configurations will allow users to get a maximum density of 1,344 dual socket, Quad-core Xeon blades; or 672 quad socket, dual-core AMD Opteron blades in the box. The ICE Cube containers are available in 20 or 40 foot container sizes. ICE Cube with IBM BladeCenter T and HT is available immediately and offered worldwide by Rackable Systems and its channel partners.
