Scalent Virtualization flexibility for Sun Logical Domains | | 2008-06-12 | | Scalent has released Version 2.5 of its V/OE (Virtual Operating Environment) software package.
The package allows customers to move their applications around both physical and virtual machines without requiring networking and storage reconfigurations and will now support Sun’s Logical Domains (LDoms) server virtualization and partitioning technology.
Sun LDoms technology is a powerful, open source, hardware virtualization and partitioning technology, provided as standard at no extra cost on UltraSPARC T1, T2 and T2 Plus-based servers. It allows SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 servers to support up to 128 LDoms per server; being free, it can save customers up to 3,600 per system compared to proprietary virtualization technologies.
Scalent V/OE Infrastructure Virtualization software allows administrators to easily and quickly change what servers are running, the software running on them, and how they’re connected to network and storage; all in real-time.
The "Infinite Virtual Transition" feature allows operators to move OS and application images between physical and virtual machines and across different hypervisors without any conversions, a process that can take several hours on existing systems.
Scalent V/OE software enables customers to take their data centres from dead bare metal to live, connected (to network and storage) servers, in boot time.
The new software also supports Microsoft’s full iSCSI stack with the ability to boot either Fibre Channel or Ethernet servers from an iSCSI box.
