| Sun has upgraded its 6000 series modular disk arrays with the introduction of two new products that double the capacity, memory and throughput of the current 6500 series.
The Sun Storage 6580 and 6780 arrays are said to offer greater scalability, speed and performance than earlier models with up to 2GB of cache, 16 4Gbit/sec Fibre Channel ports or 1Gbit/sec iSCSI ports and up to 448 Fibre Channel or Serial ATA drives.
The 6580 Array can host up to 256 disks or 256TB, and has eight 4Gbit/sec Fibre Channel host ports with 8GB of cache. It has 16 expansion trays per controller, allowing users to combine SATA and Fibre Channel drives, and RAID 6 to protect against double drive failure.
The 6780 has 8 or 16GB of cache, 8 or 16 4Gbit/s FC ports and up to 28 expansion trays per controller along with SATA and FC hard drives and RAID 6. It has twice the IOPS and four times the throughput of the 6580.
Both arrays come with Sun StorageTek Common Array Manager software, which offers volume expansion and simplifies administration.
The new units are now shipping, the 6580 at $59,995 and the 6780 at $89,995.
