Sun launches new Open Storage product line

Sun has unveiled its latest addition to its open storage Sun Fire X4500 "Thumper" family.

The Sun Storage J4000 line features three systems ranging from 12 drives to 48 drives that can connect directly to servers running Solaris, Linux or Windows as well as OpenSolaris platforms.

Sun claims the new product line is the industry’s most scalable and reliable storage building block, offering a ten fold saving over traditional arrays when combined with Sun servers, OpenSolaris operating system and Solaris ZFS.

The company also introduced the Sun Fire X4540 storage server version of the Sun Fire X4500 "Thumper" system and claims that it offers the industry’s highest storage density and 30-50 percent in power and cooling savings at one-half the price versus traditional storage.

The new product range includes:

- Sun Storage J4200 system: With up to 12 drives per tray and up to 48 SAS/SATA drives;
- Sun Storage J4400 system: Offers 24 drives per tray, up to 6 SAS ports, up to max 192 3.5" SAS/SATA drives;
- Sun Storage J4500: Four rack unit offers an industry-leading 48 drives per tray, up to four SAS ports and up to 480 3.5" SATA Drives;
- Sun StorageTek SAS RAID HBA. A host based RAID HBA for Sun servers that allows the Sun Storage J4000 systems to connect directly to servers through one or more high speed interfaces for highly scalable external storage expansion. Enables customers to connect the Sun Storage J4000 family to Solaris, Linux, or Windows operating systems or can be deployed into Open Storage and OpenSolaris environments.

The launch continues Sun’s promotion of open storage tied to its OpenSolaris OS initiative, which Sun said can cut storage costs to below $1 per gigabyte. Traditional proprietary storage systems are around $5 to $6 a gigabyte.

The J4000 series, starts at $3,000. The Sun Fire X4540 storage server, starts at $22,000.
