Sun launches new UltraSparc T2 Plus servers | | 2008-10-13 | | | Sun is to introduce a new line of its popular Unix servers today.The Sparc Enterprise T5440 will be produced in conjunction with Fujitsu. It is based on the eight-core UltraSparc T2 Plus processor running Solaris 10. With four sockets it can support up to 256 threads and 512GB of memory when fully loaded.Whilst the first generation T2 based servers (the two-socket T5240) were pitched at network-facing uses, the beefier T5440 is suitable for heavy-duty tasks such as server virtualization, consolidation, database management, enterprise resource planning and other mid-range corporate applications.The machine fits into a 4U rack and has variety of power management features, including the ability to park idle threads disable processor cores when not in use and reduced instruction issue rates. Along with a newly designed power distribution subsystem, these features offer power consumption of up to 35 percent.Prices for the new server start at $44,995. | |
