Sun launches next generation X64 server systems | | 2008-09-17 | | | Sun Microsystems is to extend its range of Xeon-based servers with the introduction of the Sun Fire X4450 and the Sun Blade X6450. The new models are designed for scalability, virtualization and consolidationThe Sun Fire X4450 server is a four socket x64 2U rackmount server running on Intel’s Xeon 7400 series processors with up to six cores each, allowing up to 24 processors per server. The 7400 series uses up to 33 percent less power per core than the previous generation of processors. The server comes in a significantly smaller box than comparable machines.The Sun Blade X6450 server module also based on the Xeon 7400 processor. With 24 memory DIMM slots it offers 50 percent more memory capacity and up to 71 percent more processing cores per rack than the competition. Designed for use with the Sun Blade 6048 chassis they offer up to 1152 cores and up to 11Tflops performance per fully populated chassis.Operation Systems include Linux, Windows and VMware as well as Sun’s "7400 optimised" Solaris 10 10/08 which is due for release in mid October.The new products are scheduled for release in October. The X4450 server is priced from $8,545 and the Sun Blade X6450 server modules from $9,455. Trade in offers are available from Sun. | |
