Sun releases unlimited DB and application server bundle | | 2008-06-27 | | Sun Microsystems has announced a flat rate database and application server package.
The package bundles the popular open source database MySQL (recently acquired by Sun for $1 billion) with Sun’s open source GlassFish application server at a fixed rate of $65,000 per year for companies with fewer than 1000 staff, allowing an unlimited number of servers across an entire organization. Larger companies will be charged according to an incremental tiering system the details of which have yet to be announced.
Enterprise software customers are increasingly choosing open source software because they are demanding freedom from proprietary compliance issues, proprietary lock-in, and proprietary license fees. Users want to deploy the latest innovations on multi-CPU, multi-core hardware and the latest virtualization technologies, without incurring pricing penalties from proprietary software vendors.
The application server market is presently dominated by Oracle (BEA’s WebLogic and Oracle Application Server) and IBM’s websphere.
According to Sun, for a typical customer with fewer than 1,000 employees running application servers on 20 dual-CPU, dual-core x86 servers and running database servers on 10 dual-CPU, dual-core x86 servers, the three year total cost of ownership (TCO) for proprietary software will exceed $3 million USD. The three year TCO for GlassFish and MySQL Unlimited for this same configuration is just $240,000 – a saving of over $2.76 million.
