Sun to launch SSD storage | | 2008-06-05 | | Sun Microsystems has announced plans to start selling solid-state disks in storage systems this year.
The flash memory based discs would offer clients three times the performance at one-fifth the energy consumption of traditional spinning disks. The SSDs would be optimized for the MySQL database and other applications, and work with the file system for Sun’s Solaris operating system ZFS.
Solid-state drives having no moving parts use less energy and require less maintenance than spinning disks and are said to be faster and more reliable than traditional drives.
However these improvements come at a price. A conventional 1 terabyte hard drive costs about $550, an SSD of similar capacity can run more than $10,000.
The new products are scheduled for release at the end of the year. Sun has not yet provided details on capacity or price.
