Sun’s Rock chips "on track"

Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz has announced that the long delayed Rock processors will be released this year. Speaking to Wall Street analysts, Schwartz stated “I think we’ve said to plan on it for later this year, and we are still on track,”The UltraSparc-RK processors and the related Supernova systems were originally due for release in late 2008 and are now scheduled for the second half of 2009.The new chips will have 16 cores with support for 32 threads and will incorporate performance boosting technologies developed by Sun the most significant of which are scout threads for the Sparc cores, and transactional memory.Rock processors will replace the Sparc T chip series currently used in Sun/Fujitsu Sparc Enterprise machines which make up the bulk of Sun’s enterprise-server sales.
