Transitive offers Solaris applications for Windows Server 2008 | | 2008-07-17 | | Cross platform virtualization solutions provider Transitive have announced its QuickTransit software will run within Hyper-V, the Windows Server 2008 hypervisor.
This will allow users to run SPARC-based Solaris applications on their x86 Windows servers without porting or recompiling, resulting in cost-effective new solutions for scalability, high availability, disaster recovery and legacy application re-hosting.
As QuickTransit supports 64-bit distribution, it allows SPARC-based applications to be installed or copied onto x86 servers which will then run in the same way as they would on the more expensive SPARC servers.
“QuickTransit and Hyper-V are a great fit,” said Ian Robinson, vice-president of marketing for Transitive. “The combination of a leading cross-platform virtualization solution and a robust, affordable hypervisor integrated into the most broadly-deployed server operating system is a ‘win-win’ for enterprise customers. Used in Hyper-V, QuickTransit allows thousands of additional non-Windows applications to run on the latest Windows Server 2008 systems without the costs, delays or disruption of porting.”
For Linux operating systems, QuickTransit runs on either Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 or 5, or on Novell’s SUSE Linux 9 and 10. Enterprises that want to consolidate their servers can install QuickTransit in a Hyper-V, VMware or Xen hypervisor running on one of these flavours of Linux.
Transitive offers three configurations of its QuickTransit product line:
QuickTransit Workstation is intended for use on desktop and laptop PCs;
QuickTransit Server is used for large-scale data centre consolidation projects;
QuickTransit Legacy is a specialized version for application re-hosting from very old legacy hardware running operating system versions that are no longer supported.
QuickTransit Server runs applications from SPARC-based servers running Solaris 8 or higher, which are still being supported by Sun. Older applications, such as Solaris 2.5.1 or 2.6 will require QuickTransit Legacy.
